Rekindling my Love of Reading
Ever since I got my Kindle in the fall, it's become my favorite device of the dozens of digital goodies that can be found in my apt or bag. Not only is the Kindle the cutest little thing in the world, but it's often smaller, lighter and and more versatile than its paper and cardboard book counterparts. Plus if you are someone that likes to read more than one thing at a time, or is tearing through books at the speed of light, this device will change your life because you can buy new books at the snap of a finger and access dozens of them all at once.
The best feature is that you can keep up with your reading even if you forget your Kindle, using the iphone or Android app. So if I'm in the subway and can't even access my email, I can still get ahead in my book-- and it auto-syncs with the kindle so I just pick up where I left of. Rad.
Ok, enough of the Kindle love-fest. And no, Amazon did not pay me for this promotion...though they should. The real purpose of this post was to tell you about my favorite books of the year so far. Here's what I've read:
This was the first novel that I have read in probably a year, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out how much I enjoyed a novel! If you are a frequent novel reader (and a female), you've probably read this already, but if you haven't, buy it, read it, love it. It's a page turner (or in the words of R. Kelly, "a cliff hanga"), with a very compelling plot about racial relations in the south in the 50s, and a very lovable cast of female characters.
Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose, by Toni Hsieh
The story of the man who started Zappos, this book is not as impeccably written as some other of the business books I've read, but Tony's exciting story through the ups and downs of starting, selling, funding and running tech companies kept me reading. Lots of lessons to be heard about entrepreneurialism...and of course, many interesting anecdotes about Zappos.
Unlike, Delivering Happiness, this book takes the more traditional business book approach of stating and explaining best practices about business behavior, through research and examples from experts and example companies. I felt it was lacking a true point of view, and subsequently repeated itself often, hammering home somewhat obvious efficiency techniques for successful teams and businesses. Verdict: Eh, skip it.
The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin
This is hands down my favorite book of the year. It may sound cheesy, and I must admit it holds the same sort of stigma as Eat, Pray, Love (which after getting over it, I finally read last year...and loved), but this book is great. This is the story of a very successful woman, in a happy relationship, with two great kids and a great job, who simply decides that she is not as happy as she wants to be. She takes the self-aware approach to focus on happiness for a year-- making resolutions to promote her happiness, reading and researching the history and schools of thought around happiness, and ultimately discovering that we are all in charge of our own destiny and can chose whether to be happy! This is not a desperate woman attempting to make herself happy-- this is a busy New Yorker who is sick of being always in a rush, unappreciative or feeling that her mood is not within her control. I highlighted and note-took all over this book (yes, you can do that electronically with the kindle!) and caught myself making changes to my behavior based on the things I'd read. I even did a massive kitchen clean and reorganization which was one of the most satisfying Saturday's I've had in forever. Read it.
I Was Told There'd Be Cake, by Sloane Crosley
Recommended by a co-worker as a fun read, I've since recommended it to everyone who wants to be entertained on a vacation, plane, or just wants some light-hearted reading before bed. It's a collection of true(?) short stories about a Westchester native and 20 something Manhattanite, told with a heavy dose of sarcasm, self-deprecation and wit. From stories about locking herself out twice in one day (sounds familiar doesn't it?), to serving as a bride's maid (and yes, that spelling is intentional: this job is equal to that of a household maid/slave), the writing style is hilarious, and I found myself literally laughing out loud on the subway. The only disappointment was finishing it; and with that, I pressed "order" on my kindle and purchased her second book, How Did You Get this Number, which I'm currently plowing through.

MyTracks Morning
Oh how I love the spring in NYC! Took the Sarthe out this morning for my first pre-work bike ride of the season with Adam. We met on the WSH and headed up for the park....after a loop and a half we went down to La Grainne Cafe for a latte and crossiant. This is becoming my fav neighborhood spot: great french cafe food + sunny windows + lots of children walking to school (total perv comment, sorry). Anyway, what a way to start a Friday.
Adam used the MyTracks app on his phone to track our ride which is pretty rad. I've got to get this thing set up-- shows your route, speed, elevation...wowza, Paul Schwartz is going to be jealous. Will have to show him this weekend so we can track our 5 Borough Ride on Sunday!

Mobile Is the Future
Here's a shameless plug for the video that introduces Eric Schmidt at the Mobile World Congress, which was worked on by yours truly. I had nothing to do with the speech, so you can stop watching after 3 minutes ;)

Android Obsession
Ever since I got the sweet new Nexus One for Christmas, thanks Goog, I've been obsessed. I haven't blogged much about it because, well, everyone else is writing about it, a lot. But, for the record, I love it. The Creative Lab (my group at work) has been very involved in the marketing, and the guy that sits next to me designed the logo....so basically, I feel proud, and almost famous.
Somehow (probably late one night) Jonathan started making our team members into droids (modeled after the little green dude above). They looked so cool, Andy (big Berndt) said he should make a droid for everyone. Here's what he made for me:
And here's a poster of the whole team:

The future of Computers-- TMI
Every once in a while I need to take a break from blogging about crafts and geek out. Today's the day-- lucky you! Check out this rad video about the future of computers-- it's going to be TMI for sure. Neato.
Hard to even imagine life before computers....what did people do at offices? Talk on the phone? I currently use my office phone about once a week-- wonder when they will just eliminate them all together and everyone will just call through video and voice chat on Gmail. Very soon I would bet.
On the subject of super killer technology, it's been several months now that Virgin America has been offering wifi in the sky-- this is pretty great for generally killing time while flying. There's really nothing better than internet at 30 thousand feet....Except maybe FREE internet at 30 thousand feet! Starting today Google is paying for wifi on all Virgin flights through the new year. Here's a little video that I happened to help produce:

Technology is a Girl's Best Friend. (Congrats Megan!)
So today I got a very exciting email from Quinn: James rocked it up before 6am this morning! This definately takes the cake as the earliest morning engagement--talk about eager beaver (I would be too if I was dating Megan)! I was so excited, I immediately chatted her and jumped into the nearest video conference room for a virtual congratulations...
I waited anxiously with virtual flowers (from Leslie's birthday yesterday) and zoomed the screen in close for a big fat virtual hug and kiss. I screamed and she ran towards the screen beaming to show off the ring:
Then 3 engineers (who had actually reserved the room) walked in on Megan, and our fun was spoiled.... Awkward. Whatever, it still made my day!

I Suck at Photoshop
Lucky me got to go to Photoshop 1 class today at New Horizon's Computer Learning School. (Thanks Sergey for providing full reimbursement for such fab professional development programs). It proved more useful than the videos and was actually a pretty sweet intro to the PS3 (as such seasoned users as myself call it), and even if I can't make anything legit, at least I will understand when people on my team talk about layers, CMYK and gradients... which is more than I could say yesterday.
I got to go with Kron (Allison Kronick), which was an added bonus/distraction. We both did really well paying attention while our teacher demonstrated how to turn a picture he took of a corvette (which he called the "vett") in a parking lot into this dazzling image:
I must also mention that for the first 3 hours I thought the "vett" was part of the photoshop lingo meaning something like base image....Really. After 6 hours in the classroom I started to feel like an antsy 6th grader and started practicing my skills by making really professional looking images of Kron and sending them to the Creative Lab to show off my new skillz:
To which she replied:
Anyway, I'll be installing that program on my machine STAT and hopefully creating some more worthy images shortly. Lookout, Ed.

Favorite Places
Shameless self promotion: 2 weeks ago we launched Google Maps Favorite Places. Basically we asked local experts and celebs in NYC and SF to create MyMaps to show their favorite places on the map. Video here. We then created custom maps pins for each celeb. We launched it with a bomb event at SF City Hall, where Gavin Newsome spoke and I stood outside city hall and greeted people coming to the event:
For every person that asked me where the event was, I got at least one city related question such as "Where do I go for Jury Duty?" and "I'm looking for a birth certificate for my daughter..." Classic.
To thank me for my work on the campaign Ji (lead designer on the project) made me a custom pin:
Which basically sums what I do on my team: spirit/resource fairy and bartender?

Good News for today
Courtesy of the best weather site on the web: www.doineedanumbrella.com. Seriously, can someone create a decent weather site for 10 day forecasts that isn't covered with crap and completely illegible? Thanks.

hiPhone!
So after surviving a full 36 hours sans natberry (not to mention sans air conditioning and TV), I finally trekked across the street to the big Apple to say (h)"iPhone!"
It's white and beautiful and shiny and though I've only had it in my hands for 30 minutes, I feel the way my dad does about his midlife crisis convertible-- "my only regret is that I waited this long to purchase it."
Please send recs for rad apps.

Chrometastic
Shameless plug of the day is that we launched a pretty wicked, killer, technologically-tickling site: www.chromeexperiments.com. It shows how sweet the javascript capabilities are of Google Chrome, which if you didn't already know is a web browser....which if you didn't already know is how you get online. You know that little IE or FireFox button you click before your (Google) homepage comes up? That's your browser.
Even if you're too lazy (lame) to get Chrome, you can still play with these sweet experiments, which are little games to help you waste time in meetings and realize that wow, technology really is sweeeeeet....and even sweeter if you're running Chrome. Here's a video that Neil made about the experiments. Now watch it and go play with them.

Next Generation Music Video
Whoa this is a really cool interactive music video....I don't quite understand how it works but it's wicked killer technology and fun to play around with. Clearly sent to me by Aaron who is coolest, smartest, 26 year old on our team. Yeah, I work with geniuses.
